Van Halen changes lead singers more than AT&T changes its name-and they're not showing any signs of changing any time soon. Formed clear back in 1974, if you can believe it, they would release their debut album, with David Lee Roth on vocals, in 1978. The album was brilliant, thanks in large part to the genius stylings of guitarist/founder Eddie Van Halen, who would go down in history as one of the most talented musicians ever to pick up the electric guitar. Roth would leave the band in 1985 and was seamlessly (but controversially) replaced with Sammy Hagar, who would lead the band to new heights of commercial success. Hagar would exit the band after a dispute in 1996, and was replaced temporarily with David Lee Roth. After Roth, Gary Cherone took over vocal duties, but the album fizzled and Cherone was dismissed from the band. Hagar rejoined the band again and toured with them, then left it again and was replaced with David Lee Roth, who is currently touring with the band. Got all that?
There's enough material in Van Halen alone for about 3 seasons of "Behind the Music." But ultimately it's best to put the band's soap opera inner
politics aside and concentrate on what they did best-consistently delivered killer tunes for several years and, led by Eddie Van Halen, pushed the electric guitar's capabilities to dazzling heights. Whether you're a Roth fan or a Hagar fan (most still pretend that Gary Cherone thing never happened), there's more than enough material to enjoy.
