Theory of a Deadman is a killer Canadian rock band that came together in Vancouver, Canada in 2001. They were first recognized by Nickleback’s Chad Kroeger after Tyler Connolly (Theory of a Deadmans lead singer) gave him a copy of their demo at an after show after party. Chad listened to the demo and couldn’t believe his ears, he was immediately impressed by the material he heard. He gave Tyler a call back letting him know he had listened to the demo and liked what he heard; he then took the demo over to his label (Roadrunner Records) and soon after Theory of a Deadman was in the office talking business and stoked to be signing a contract with Roadrunner Records!
They went straight to the studio and got to work, going over songs time and time again until they got it just right. They then released their first self-titled album Theory of a Deadman on September 17, 2002. This album was an instant success and everyone was asking, who are these guys and where did they come from? Fans as well as radio personalities alike couldn’t get enough of the music they were putting out and after constant requests for their songs, Make Up Your Mind catapulted to #1 on the main rock charts! They released four singles, with two international videos for "Nothing Could Come Between Us" and "Make Up Your Mind." It was these two songs that propelled them into more mainstream music and acknowledgement.
Chad Kroeger (Nickelback) and Joey Scott (lead singer of the band Saliva) got in touch with Tyler Connally (Theory of a Deadman) to perform the song Hero on the soundtrack of the first Spider-Man movie. This was a huge opportunity and both a single of the song and video for the song was released. This also brought a massive amount of attention to the band.
They worked their butts off, wrote songs like crazy and toured like you wouldn’t believe and in 2003, the band won the Juno Award for Best New Group of the Year! They had no idea what to expect and when their name was called as the winner, they were stoked!
Then on March 29, 2005, Theory released their second album, Gasoline. After the release of the album, the band toured with hard rock mainstay, Shinedown. After that Theory wasted no time getting back on the road and began a promotional tour, with headliners Breaking Benjamin and The Exies. Soon after that tour their hit song Gasoline appeared in the soundtrack of the 2005 video game Fahrenheit, which was pretty killer!
Then it was time to get to work on the 3rd album. Knowing it had to be completely different from the first two, they were ready to go all out and make this their best album ever! The band returned to the grammy-nominated producer, Howard Benson who in turn issued marching orders that set the tone of the project.
"We really dug hard on this one," Connolly notes. "The longer you're in a band, the more you write songs, the better you get. We've had such a great opportunity to figure out what to do better, how to write a better song and keep building and building. That's exciting for us."
He went on to say, "Before we even went into the studio, Howard wanted to gear this record up to sound huge," Connolly recalls about Benson's "all killer, no filler" approach to the record. "He said, You have to go into a record with great songs. You can't make them while you're there. You can't just go in with one or two great songs. You've got to have 10.' So we just kept sending him songs until we had the 10 to 12 great ones, and then he said, 'OK, let's go.”
On April 1st, 2008, they released their third kick ass album, Scars & Souvenirs, which contains their three hit singles, So Happy, Bad Girlfriend and All or Nothing. Their 3rd album is not one breath short of amazing, it's a kick ass album and the songs are bad ass! If you haven't checked it out, you should; it's bad ass and definitely worth checking out!
"I always try to remind the guys and myself that there are 20 bands lined up behind us just waiting for a chance to take our place," says frontman Tyler Connolly. "So that means we had to go in there and make a great record."
With Scars & Souvenirs, the Vancouver trio has hit its mark, bringing out killer songs like All or Nothing, So Happy and their huge hit that’s already topping #1 on the billboard charts, Bad Girlfriend. Theory of a Deadman is a very versatile rock band that’s dedicated to their music, their fans and these guys know how to rock out!
