BAND: smile Empty Soul (Ryan Martin Bass Guitar)
Smile Empty Soul is a kick ass California based band that consists of Sean Danielsen-guitars/vocals. Ryan Martin bass guitar and Jake Kilmer on the drums. This 3 piece rock/alternative band was first established in Van Nuys California in 2003.These bad boys rock the house and know how to stay on top. They were first signed with Lava/Atlantic and then they left in search of a record label that would be behind them 100%, they went onto bigger and better things and started MRAfia Records and came back stronger and better then ever. Today I got to interview Ryan Martin (Bass Guitar) and here’s what he had to say.
JUICY BANDS: How did you guys come up with the name Smile Empty Soul?
RYAN: Simple observation of American culture, from a song 8 yrs old: empty soul-less people walking around with smiles on there face.
JUICY BANDS: How long has the band been together?
RYAN: 10 yrs homie
JUICY BANDS: When were you like, "That's it, I wana be a rock star, I'm ready for a label?”
RYAN: When I was in 7th grade and I saw nirvana’s live tonight sold out video at Jacobs house, that’s when I knew that’s what i wanted to do.
JUICY BANDS: One of my favorite songs is, "Bottom of the Bottle” It’s a kick ass song, It rocks! Is there some kind of a hidden meaning behind that song, how did you guys come up with that song and what's it all about?
RYAN: Its really about finding that thing in life that you love and is your drug. For some its tattoos or music(thats us) for others its meth and hookers.
JUICY BANDS: What was your most memorable tour and why?
RYAN: I’d have to say the 2004 Snocore tour, with Trapt, Finger 11 and Strata. Good vibes with great people, great shows and just an amazing experience. Our last tour 2007 spring with the Exies was pretty cool to though, so it’s hard to say.
JUICY BANDS: How many albums have you guys recorded?
RYAN: 3 about to be 4
JUICY BANDS: What's your favorite song on your most recent album and what’s your favorite song of all time?
RYAN: I really liked the hit Adjustments, off our last record vultures. Its a big fuck you to our last producer and his talentless waste of cum son. My favorite song of all time? Its raining men by paul shafer.
JUICY BANDS: [laughs] How often does Smile Empty Soul tour?
RYAN: Not as much as we want...6 mo a yr....soon to be more:)
JUICY BANDS: When the band's on tour what do you guys do to kill time?
RYAN: read books, smoke cannabis, dvds, cartoons, music, laugh.
JUICY BANDS: Who are some of your greatest musical influences?
RYAN: Real artists like, Nirvana, Deftones, Alice in chains, Sara Mclaughlin, DJ shadow, Radiohead, At the Drive in...too long a list.
JUICY BANDS: If you guys could perform with any musician dead or alive, who would it be and why?
RYAN: I'm not sure, i’d have to say, Alice in Chains in 1992 would be the shit!
JUICY BANDS: Are you going to be doing any radio show appearances?
RYAN: Yes when the new record is done and we hit the road behind it.
JUICY BANDS: You guys rock the house! When is Smile Empty Soul’s next tour going to be?
RYAN: Late summer 2008.
JUICY BANDS: When Smile Empty Soul’s not touring or writing or recording, what do you do in your spare time?
RYAN: I spend most of my time reading, playing music, painting or fucking. As for the other guys, mostly the same without the painting.
JUICY BANDS: Are you guys planning on releasing any new albums in the future?
RYAN: Yeah, 2008’
JUICY BANDS: What did you guys do for New Years ?
RYAN: We played a show in orange county. The Real Housewives of the OC were there I shit you not. Jake ended up banging one of them in his Durango, I got pics!
JUICY BANDS: [laughs] Any New Year’s resolutions?
RYAN: Think for your self question authority.
JUICY BANDS: Is there anything you'd like to say to your fans?
RYAN: Thank for being there for us, we love you all.
