Formed in Washington, D.C. in 1995, Nothingface is a metal band founded by David Gabbard (vocals), Chris Houck (drums), Bill Gaal (bass) and Tom Maxwell (guitar). After replacing Gabbard with Matt Holt on vocals, the band released its debut album, Pacifier in 1997. Over the next ten years the band toured aggressively alongside bands such as Pantera and Ministry and appearing at Ozzfest. In this time Nothingface released three more albums, only to take a hiatus in 2004. Nothingface reunited in 2005 and currently consists of members Holt and Maxwell, as well as Jerry Montano of Danzig (bass) and Tommy Sickles (drums).
Nothingface is one of the better modern rocks bands to emerge from the ashes of the nu-metal era. With a sound that falls somewhere between Korn, The Deftones and early Incubus, Nothingface mixes thick, heavy riffs with alternately melodic and growling vocals for a dark, menacing sound. Tracks like Skeletons' "Ether" showcase the band's ability to use dynamics to create powerful tracks that convey emotion without falling into the melodrama of emo. At a time when metal has to compete with swarms of screechy teenage pop-rock bands, Nothingface is a refreshing taste of straight-forward, distortion-fueled melodic rock with no strings attached.
