MACHINE HEAD: Backstage! (Video Footage)

MACHINE HEAD was hanging out backstage on Super Bowl Sunday (February 1, 2009) prior to their concert with Metallica!

The U.S. version of the special edition of "The Blackening", MACHINE HEAD's Grammy-nominated masterwork, was released last October via Roadrunner Records.

Hailed as the best metal album of 2007 by journalists, metal radio stations and fans alike, "The Blackening" earned a Grammy nomination for the fan-favorite track "Aesthetics of Hate".

"The Blackening Special Edition" is two-disc CD/DVD set that features an assortment of extras, including rare never before heard bonus tracks such as: covers of IRON MAIDEN's "Hallowed Be Thy Name". It also features, over an hour of live performance footage! There's also what many hardcore fans have been patiently waiting for: four never-before-seen performances of MACHINE HEAD celebrating the 10th anniversary of their debut album, "Burn My Eyes", captured in Philadelphia in 2004!

Machinehead Guitarist, Phil Demmel Collapsed on Stage

MACHINE HEAD guitarist Phil Demmel collapsed onstage last night, during the second-to-last song of the band's performance in Sheffield, England.

Robb Flynn (singer) says, "He's doing much better now and taking it easy." He went on to say, "As Phil has mentioned before, the doctors say he suffers from episodes of Cardiogenic Syncope and has for the last 17 years or so. We're all a little worried here in our camp, but Phil genuinely wants to carry on. It is a bit unclear to us as to why these keep happening, but at Phil's request, we will finish out all these dates through to Matallica in L.A. [on December 17 and December 18]"

The band adds in this statement: "MACHINE HEAD wishes to extend our gratitude to the good people of Sheffield for their support and for being so understanding at the end of our show. MACHINE HEAD are still set to perform with Demmel at the last two remaining stops in Antwerp and Luxembourg."

When guitarist Robert Flynn left metal group Vio-lence in 1992, he decided to get together with some friends (bassist Adam Dulce, guitarist Logan Mader and drummer Tony Constanza) and form thrash outfit Machine Head in San Francisco. They were quickly aligned with Roadrunner Records and had a powerful debut with Burn My Eyes, an album which many critics and publications regard as one of the most influential metal albums ever. Plus, they received extra media attention (or lack thereof) with their video "Davidian," which ultimately was banned from MTV.
It was also around this time when there was a drummer shuffle. Costanza was replaced by Chris Kontos in 1994 and a year later when Kontos left the band, Dave McClain filled in the empty slot, just in time for their 1997 sophomore effort The More Things Change. Ironically, things changed quite heavily. Mader left the band in '98, so Ahrue Luster filled his shoes on The Burning Red, their third album. Also, their sound changed as more influences of nu-metal made its way into the music, thus turning off some of Machine Head's fans. The same could be said of their fourth effort, Supercharger.
Machine Head went on a hiatus for a few years. Luster left for Ill Nino, so when Machine Head reformed, Phil Demmel filled his slot. The guys were reenergized and returned to their thrash ways on 2004's Through the Ashes of Empires. Their single "Imperium" revealed they had returned with their raw emotion. Now, the guys are gearing up for The Blackening, due out this year.
All Machine Head cares about is making the hardest music possible and performing it on stage, all while watching grown men beat the crap out of each other before their very eyes. That may be sadistic and at times, that's how Machine Head is, but that is also the reason why we love them. The motivational "Imperium" exemplifies their intensity and is a great example of how a metal song can hold lyrical value where Flynn talks about how he will no longer be mistreated by the demons around him. As long as they keep that energy, they will build upon their already stellar legacy.
