It's hard to believe the song "Inside out" came out so long ago, yet it's still fresh in our minds. I got the chance to Interview Max from the band, EVE-6 and here's what he had to say.
JUICY BANDS: How did you guys come up with the name Eve 6?
Max: We were recording the first record and we had an end of the day ritual of watching episodes of the X-files, that Tony had accumulated of the first season. Eve 6 was a character in one of the episodes. We just kinda of took to it. We still didn't have a name for the band at the time and needed one badly so we decided on Eve 6.
JUICY BANDS: [laughs] That's awesome! How long has the band been together?
Max: John and I started playing together at the end of our freshman year of high school. We met Tony shortly before we graduated. John and I close to ten years and with Tony it's been about 5 or 6 years.
JUICY BANDS: How did you guys come up with the title, "It's All In Your Head"?
Max: We had a meeting with Clive Davis, the head of our record company. I went to go relieve myself in the bathroom. When I looked in the mirror I noticed I had sweat stains under my arms. Major social anxiety at the time, I had quick little panic, I guess. I told myself, "It's all in your head," and I kept telling myself that. Later I thought its a pretty appropriate title for this record.
JUICY BANDS: "Think Twice" is a pretty deep song. Does it come from a personal experience?
Max: I can definitely relate to the lyrics in that song. I just thought of how I was feeling, I thought of the first two lines and then it all came to me from there.
JUICY BANDS: One of my favorite songs is, "Still Waiting Here." Is there some kind of a hidden message in that song, what's that song about?
Max: It can be about two different things. It means different things to me at different times when we play it, it just depends on the band mood and the energy and the way they all coordinate. I don't know if there is any specific message in that song. It's just kinda a release, one of those songs you hear and you just get it all out and are free.
JUICY BANDS: How long did it take to record the album?
Max: The album took about three months to record. We were in the studio everyday trying to get it done. We took our time getting the songs together and doing pre-production and finding the right producer.
JUICY BANDS: What's the story behind the Eve-6 kick-ass album cover, how did you guys come up with that?
Max: The album cover came at the final hour, last minute, the last thing we did. We had an album cover, bu we weren't really happy with it, so we had a friend Scratch Eve 6 into a table at a local fast food place back in Los Angeles. Then he took one of the ideas from the old album cover which was this headless character and scratched him into a piece of wood. It's awesome, he sketched it himself and it's not computerized.
JUICY BANDS: What's your favorite song from the album?
Max: It changes frequently, sometimes i'll get tired of one and pick another one. Right now, I really like,"Think Twice," is a blast to play, I have a lot of fun with it! Another one of my favorite's would have to be, "At Least We're Dreaming", because we have such a blast playing that live and we sound awesome to. Then again, my favorite is always changing, so ask me next wk. and I may or may not have a different one. [laughs]
JUICY BANDS: How does the band decide what will be the first and last song played at concerts?
Max: It kinda takes a few shows to work it out and refine it. We just kinda go off songs that we want to play. We definitely want to please the audience, but we want to chose a set for a show that's a half hour long. Do a blitz of songs that gets the people going even if people haven't necessarily heard them. We like to get ourselves going as well, that way everyone's pumped up and having a good time. At our last show we did "Amphetamines" for our first song and "Inside out" for our last. Everyone went going crazy when they heard us play, "inside out" because it was one of our first major songs to hit the radio scene, so it's a real positive way to end the show.
JUICY BANDS: If you could perform with any music artist dead or alive, who would it be?
Max: I'd love to perform with Tom Petty. Always been a huge fan of his.
JUICY BANDS: Did you guys get a record deal right away and how'd you guys go about getting signed with a label?
Max: We played locally as much as we could, every chance we'd get. We were still in high school at the time and a scout from an independent company called, "Doctor Dream" in Orange County saw us and liked what they heard. Through that connection, we met a woman who become our manager and hooked us up with RCA! Then we did a couple of demos but that was mainly to pass around to our friends, we we're already signed by that point.
JUICY BANDS: Does the tattoo on your neck stand for anything inperticular?
Max: It means courage. It was one of those dumb idea's you get on a drunked night, then regret when you wake up in the morning.
JUICY BANDS: [laughs] If you weren't in a band, what would you be?
Max: I never really thought about it. When I was younger I always wanted to bartend, so I would have to go with bartending.
Somewhere small with a good jukebox.
JUICY BANDS: When the band's on tour what do you guys do to kill time?
Max: We listen to music. Do some reading. Do some wandering. Stare into space. Just kinda mill about.
JUICY BANDS: Is there anything you would like to say to your fans?
Max: Thanks for being fans and making us who we are today, It's unreal.
JUICY BANDS: Thanks so much for your time.
Max: Thank you.
