Poised between heavy metal rock and acoustic introspection, the dark underworld and mainstream success, their formula gave them worldwide success, but ultimately led to tensions and addictions that would not only break up the band, but also cost one member his life. Alice in Chains began in 1987 when guitarist Jerry Cantrell met singer Layne Staley at Seattle's Music Bank studios. They hit it off and soon asked Cantrell friends Mike Starr (bass) and Sean Kinney (drums) to join them, taking their name from Staley's high school metal band Alice N Chainz. They built a local following in Seattle and signed to Columbia in 1989, releasing their heavy metal debut Facelift in 1990. The single "Man in the Box" was an MTV hit, but the group surprised many by releasing an acoustic album, Sap in 1991. Shortly thereafter, Seattle became the epicenter of the grunge movement, and Alice in Chains went from being marketed as a metal act to a more alternative bent, starting with a spot on the influential Singles soundtrack that built buzz for their second album. Dirt, released in 1992, would be their most popular album and featured their darkest, most morbid lyrics, giving rise to rumors that Staley was using heroin. Following the release of Dirt, Starr left the group, to be replaced by Mike Inez, and the band played the third edition of the Lollapalooza tour in 1993. Their popularity was cemented when their a second acoustic EP, Jar of Flies, became the first EP to top the album charts. Their next album, Alice in Chains debuted at #1 in 1995, but there was no tour, fuelling rumors of tensions within the band. In 1996, the band appeared on MTV Unplugged and later released an album of that session. Side and solo projects followed, and Columbia released a box set, live album, and greatest hits disc between 1999-2001. By 2002, many assumed the group was done for good, suspicions that were sadly confirmed when Staley was found dead of a heroin overdose in April. In the last two years, though, the rest of the group has performed at a few festivals and benefits with various guest singers, sparking speculation of new material.
Alice in Chains perfectly walked the line between hard rock angst and acoustic introspection, offering angry churners like "Dam That River" and "Down in a Hole," but then sweetening the pot and deepening the emotions with "Heaven Beside You" and "I Stay Away." They offered the perfect soundtrack for both raging against the machine and just sitting around feeling sorry for yourself. And their successful formula - electric and acoustic guitar, Staley's gravelly voice - continue to spawn countless alt-imitators like Godsmack and Creed.
